Jaimini Sutrardha Deepika

There are two principal ancient systems in Astrology-Parasara System and Jaimini System. There are a good number of Classics written in Parasara System that are useful to learn or practice Parasara System. Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra (BPHS), Brihat Jataka, Saravali, Jataka Parijatha, Phaladeepika, etc.
All these classics are written in the form of Sanskrit Shlokas. But there are many commentaries for these classics written in different regional languages and English. So, astrology enthusiasts can learn Parasara Astrology even without a guru at least to some extent. Hence the Parasara System became very popular.
But the story of Jaimini Astrology is different. There are only 3 original texts.
1.       Vriddha Karika
These are Sanskrit shlokas which explain the concepts and principles of Jaimini System. The author’s name is not known. Many Scholars are of the opinion that Maharshi Garga is the author of these Karikas. They do not contain any commentary. These Karikas available now explain the sutras given in first 2 adhyayas of Jaimini Upadesa Sutras (JUS) only.
2.       Brihat Parasara Hora Shastra (BPHS)
There are 7 Adhyayas in BPHS which explain the concepts and principles of Jaimini Astrology, mentioned in the first 2 adhyayas of Jaimini Sutras. The content in BPHS matches with JUS except some minor differences.
3.       Jaimini Sutras
The Jaimini Sutras written by Sage Jaimini contains 4 adhyayas. Each of the 4 Adhyayas contains 4 padas each. So, in all there are 16 padas, and 924 Sutras. Of these 4 adhyayas, only 3 adhyayas have been considered.
1st Adhyaya deals with Karakamsa, Arudha Pada, Upapada, Ayurdaya, Graha and Rasi balas and Rajayogas.
Besides the above 3 texts, I have referred to Jataka Tatwa wherever necessary.
There are about 30 Commentaries on Jaimini Sutras like Jyothisha Phala Ratnamala by Sri Krishna Mishra, Kalpalatha by Sri Somanatha Mishra, Jaimini Padyamritha, Vanchanatheeya, Jataka Sara Sangraha by Raghava Bhatta, Jyothisha Pradeepika by Laxmana Suri, etc.
These Commentaries are in Sanskrit. My guru Maha-mahopadhyaya Sri Madhura Krishna Murthy Sastry wrote a commentary on BPHS in Telugu. It was published in 4 volumes. The 2nd volume deals with the 7 adhyayas of Jaimini-Argala-adhyaya, Karakamsa-adhyaya, etc which correspond to the first 2 adhyayas of the Jaimini Sutras. My guru has extensively quoted from the commnetaries of Somanatha and Krishna Mishra in his works. His commentary inspired me to study the Jaimini Sutras, Parasara Hora and some of the other available commentaries on Jaimini Sutras.
Jaimini Astrology is full of controversies that create confusion and hence it did not become popular like Parasara System.
1.       How to cast Arudhas is itself a controversy. Some use exceptions and some others do not. I have published a book titled “Casting Arudhas, the right way” where I discussed this issue and finally concluded that there is no need to use exceptions.
2.       How many chara karakas are to be considered – 7 or 8.
I use 7 chara-karaka-scheme.
3.       Which Navamsa and Drekkana charts to use.
There are 3 types of Navamsa charts as suggested by Parasara, Krishna Mishra and Somanatha Mishra. I use Parasara suggested Navamsa chart.
There are 3 types of Drekkana charts-Parasara, Kramavyutkrama, Parivrittitraya. I follow Parasara suggested drekkana chart.
Not only that I use all divisional charts as suggested by Parasara.
4.       Dasa calculation methodology
There are controversies regarding chara dasa and Padanadhamsa dasa (PND) calculation.
I have followed the methodology practiced by Sri Vemuri Ramamurthy Sashtry, a renowned Scholar & an Authority on Jaimini Astrology in case of PND. I have explained in this book how to tie the events by using Pada-nadhamsa Dasa (PND) for 3 natives by following Vemuri’s methodology.
I offer my pranams to Sri K N Rao, because it is only after studying the two books written by him Chara Dasa and Karakamsa & Manduka Dasa I have developed interest in the study of Jaimini Astrology and started my astrological journey.
